Hyperhidrosis and Excessive Sweating |
|
Sweating is a normal bodily function that cools and lubricates the skin in the areas such as the underarms, under the breasts, between the legs, the palms, the soles of the feet, and the face. Excessive sweating in these areas can be most embarrassing and can negatively affect your life and confidence.
What areas of the body can be affected? Some areas of the skin have many sweat glands, while other areas have relatively few. The areas with the most sweat glands are the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In addition to sweat glands, skin also has oil glands that surround almost every hair root. In the underarm and the groin, the sweat gland is called the apocrine gland.
What causes the sweaty smell or bad body odour? The apocrine gland secretes a very thick type of sweat that has a large amount of fatty chemicals in it. These chemicals can be broken down by bacteria on the surface of the skin to create the smelly chemicals that is responsible for body odour.
What make the sweat gland over produce? Over activity of the sweat glands, is caused by a chemical in the body called acetylcholine. Too much of this chemical present next to the sweat glands stimulates them to produce large amounts of fluid which result it excessive sweating and unpleasant body ordour.
How do anti sweating treatments work? These treatments work by injecting a medication that blocks the release of acetylcholine, this results in a significant reduction in perspiration and body ordour.
How long do the results last and is it safe? Studies have shown that 80 to 95% of patients respond after one treatment with results lasting 8 – 12 months. Risks are minimal.
Are the treatments painful? The treatments for hyperhydrosis are done in office and are very comfortable requiring only a topical anesthetic.
Are the treatments for hyperhydrosis covered by OHIP? Treatments for excess sweating are not covered under OHIP. However, the cost of medication is usually covered by private drug plans as any other prescription would be. The fee for injections is an additional charge.
