Dr. Marc DuPere talks about Breast Augmentation and Breast Lifts

Breast Augmentation is one of the most common and popular cosmetic surgery procedures preformed in the world. At the Age-Less Clinic, renowned Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Marc DuPéré, specializes in breast augmentation surgery in Toronto, Richmond Hill and York Region.

In practice since 2001, Dr. DuPéré trained and was mentored in Canada, United States and Europe by the world’s top aesthetic plastic surgeons. Dr. DuPéré helps women to correct breasts that are uneven, enhance breast size and to restore breast volume that has been lost to due pregnancy, weight change and aging.

When would breast augmentation be the best option?

  • For women unhappy with the size of their breasts.
  • For correction of breasts that are uneven either in the shape or size.
  • To restore the loss of volume, shape and size to breasts post pregnancy
  • To restore a more youthful look to breast
  • To reshape and rebalance breasts due to weight change.

What determines the size and shape of breast implant?
There are many factors that are considered by Dr. DuPéré when determining the size of the breast implant to be used. These factors include your existing anatomy, your personal preferences, and the surgical technique to be used.

Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Post Pregnancy Common?
At the Age-Less Clinic, Dr. Marc DuPéré sees many women considering breast augmentation surgery in Toronto, York Region and Richmond Hill post pregnancy. After the weight gain that normally occurs during pregnancy and the weight loss to return to pre-pregnancy weight, breasts are often smaller and can be extremely deflated with significant droop. Many women are not happy with their post pregnancy breasts and sometimes have difficulty adjusting. It is very common for women to consider either breast augmentation or breast lift surgery or both to reclaim their pre pregnancy bodies.

Dr. DuPéré, breast augmentation specialist in Toronto, York Region and Richmond Hill will help you to feel good about the way your body looks post pregnancy.

Cohesive Gel Implants vs. Saline Implants?
The most important concern for women considering breast surgery is that the results are as natural looking and feeling as possible. The choice of which implant is right for you depends on the appearance of your breast before surgery, your individual anatomy and your specific needs.

All breast implants have an exterior sac or implant shell made of silicone, a rubber-like substance. The implant is filled with one of two substances: silicone gel or saline which is measured in cubic centimeters of cc’s.

Saline Breast Implants: These implants are filled with a salt-water solution known as saline. Saline is similar to the fluids in your body so if the implant leaks it will be safely absorbed by the body. The saline implant is inserted into the patient empty and is filled once it is in position. It is then closed with a self-sealing valve.
Saline Implants are available in round and anatomical shapes and have either a smooth or textured outer shell.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants: Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel — a thick, sticky fluid (think of gummy bears) that closely mimics the feel of human fat. Some women feel that silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue.
Silicone Implants are available in round and anatomical shapes and have either a smooth or textured outer shell.

Breast Implant Placement:
Sub glandular: this is when the implant is placed over the pectoalis muscle, under the breast tissue. This procedure is considered to be less painful post surgery and has a quicker recovery. However, if your breast tissue is thin pre surgery, this placement is not recommended for saline implants as you may see and feel the implant. Cohesive gel implants are recommended for sub glandular placement.
If you have mild sagging of the breast pre-surgery sub glandular placement may be recommended. If the breasts are sagging pre surgery, placing the implant under the muscle without a breast lift results in the implant sitting up high and empty skin hanging down.

Sub muscular: The implant is placed under the pectoralis muscle. This procedure is considered to be more painful post surgery with a slightly longer recovery. This placement requires the skin, fat and muscle to be cut and stretched to accommodate the breast implant. This place is recommended for women with little breast tissue with no sagging.

Post-surgery it will take a few months for the implant to drop and settle than with over the muscle placement, so often at first the implant placement can look quite high.

If the breasts are saggy pre surgery, a breast lift is also required to avoid the implant sitting high under the muscle with excess empty skin hanging below the breast.

What are the risks involved with breast implants: The most common local complications involved with breast implants — silicone gel-filled and saline-filled—are capsular contracture, reoperation, implant removal, and rupture or deflation of the implant.

How long will I need to be off work after Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Dr. DuPéré recommends that you take at least 1 week off from work after breast augmentation surgery to allow for sufficient healing. It is very important to give yourself that time as it will help in a quicker recovery.

When will I be able to exercise after Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Dr. DuPéré encourages his patients to start walking around the house usually as soon as the next day. These aids in healing and blood flow. Low impact exercise such as walking on a tread mill on a low incline can be started after 7 days. Lower body exercises after 3 weeks and upper body exercises after 6 weeks.

Is there a lot of pain after Breast Implant Surgery?
There will be some pain or discomfort after your surgery, but Dr. DuPéré makes sure that your discomfort is controlled with pain medication. The majority of woman has a comfortable recovery.
