Eyelids - The Ageless Clinic

Your eyes say so much about you. Eyes express happiness, sadness, health, anger, surprise, love, peace and being content. They are described as the “windows of the soul.” Aging and often genetics can make your eyes appear unhappy, tired, ill and emotionless. Dr. Marc DuPéré specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery of the eyes, nose, face, breasts and body and has done thousands of blepharoplasty procedures on both men and women.

Upper and Lower Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure that removes excess droopy skin from the upper eyelids and reduces the puffy bags that are under lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery enhances your appearance by giving you a more open eye look.

For eyelid surgery to look natural and be successful, the procedure is very technique dependent and the surgical skill of the surgeon is extremely important. Most plastic surgeons are reconstructive plastic surgeons, it is very important for the surgeon to be both reconstructive and aesthetically trained.

Dr. Marc DuPéré, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon McGill University Medical School Gold Medalist, University of Toronto - 5 year reconstructive plastic surgery residency, awarded top clinical resident, Fellowship in aesthetic plastic surgery of the face, breast and body in Paris, New York and LA the world’s top aesthetic plastic surgeons
– 2 years.

What happens to the skin on the eyelids as we age?
As we age, our skin loses it elasticity. This lack of skin elasticity, combined with gravity causes the skin to wrinkle and bulge on the lower lid and to droop and hang on the upper lid.

The thin membrane the holds the fat in place weakens and this causes the fat to protrude and create bulges that looks bags under the eyes and eyebrows. This makes often makes a person look tired or much older that actual age.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Any adult who is healthy with realistic expectations is a candidate for eyelid surgery. If you genetically inherited baggy lower eyelids or droopy upper lids, you may be a candidate for eyelid surgery at a younger age than average.

Are the results of Eyelid Surgery permanent?
The results of Eyelid surgery can make your eyes look 10 years younger, however the aging clock is always going forward. The results of eyelid or blepharoplasty surgery last a very long time and you will always look better having eyelid surgery even after many years.

Where is the Eyelid Surgery done?
All surgeries by Dr. Marc DuPéré are done in a private fully accredited surgical suite that specializes in aesthetic cosmetic surgery procedures. The anesthetist is board certified, and the nurses are specially trained in cosmetic surgery procedures

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Dr. Marc DuPéré places all incisions for both upper and lower eyelid surgeries in the natural lines around your eyes. These become inconspicuous when healed.

For the upper eyelids, Dr. DuPéré will first measure and mark the excess skin around the eyes. He will then separate the skin from the underlying tissue and remove the excess fat and tissue. Dr. DuPéré will then close the incision using very small sutures that are underneath the surface of the skin. This type of closure is only preformed by board certified plastic surgeons that are specially trained in facial aesthetic surgery such as Dr. Marc DuPéré.

On the lower eyelids, Dr. DuPéré performs the transcutaneous technique which requires an incision along the eyelash margin. Through the incision, excess skin, loose muscle and fat is removed. The incision is then closed with very small sutures under the surface of the skin. The incision line fades after a short time.

How long does it take to recover from eyelid surgery?
After eyelid surgery, the sutures will remain for 6 – 8 days. They are then removed easily in office. It is common for swelling and bruising to happen, but within one to two weeks the eyelids will look normal. Make-up can be worn after the first week.
